Holiday Philanthropy

For the past three years, Denene--with the assistance of the Zebra staff--has provided Christmas gifts for children's orphanages in Jamaica. This year Denene provided a television and an early learning program for the Maxfield Park Children's home. Early learning is important for all children but especially for children who are raised in poverty with limited access. The donation of the television is in keeping with Denene's philosophy to uplift underserved and marginalized individuals.

Food for Thought: Denene Recommends
“How Poverty Changes the Brain”

Neuroscience studies are finding that the constant stress, dangers, and emotional trauma faced by people living in poverty is actually changing their brains. Since the brain is overloaded with fear and stress messages between the limbic system (which processes emotions) and the prefrontal cortex (which handles problem-solving, goal-setting, and task execution), it maxes out its capacity in such that one struggles in making decisions. This is why Zebra’s mission is so valuable: by giving low-income individuals a chance to speak about their opinions and experiences in a safe, respectful environment, we work to provide them with greater access and resources that grants them greater agency over their lives and allows them to make better choices for their health, work, and families.
